Alan Rickman plays Alex Hughes, an introspective English man struggling to come to terms with the death of a hitchhiker killed in his car in a terrible crash. Following the accident, Alex finds himself shell-shocked and snowbound in a sleepy Canadian town. Despite his sadness and reserve, he finds himself gradually drawn into relationship with the highly-functioning autistic Linda (Sigourney Weaver), whose life has also been touched by the tragedy.
