30th August 2020 | The Fall

Hi ICF family,

Thanks for joining us today for our online service! This week’s second installment in our 'The Big Picture' series is about 'The Fall'. This is a topic which we could easily discuss for a very long time and we hope the discussion questions below will give you enough to contemplate and have a fruitful discussion.

As always, if you have something encouraging to share this week, please let us know in the live comments at the start of the service. We would love to hear from you!

Our Zoom Coffee & Conversation chat is also on again after the service at about 10.45am and we hope to see you there.
Meeting ID: 849 0111 9156
Passcode: 052627

Please use the outline below in your own time, and see you at 10.00am.

[ A big thank you to Sophia, Tim G., Mark, Jen and Asha for making our service today possible. ]

🔹 Discussion questions:

The following discussion is in two parts titled 'Fall' & 'Rescue'.  You’re encouraged in Part 1, to acknowledge the horror of the fall and then to pray in confession regarding our sinfulness, both corporate as the human race and personally. In Part 2 we encourage you to allow yourself to be overwhelmed by God's love and grace and to pray with thanks and praise for His mercy, love and rescue in Jesus.

Genesis Chapter 3 - 'The Fall'

Part 1 - 'Fall'

1) Read Genesis 3:1-13.

2) Identify all the things (attitudes, actions, decisions, relationships) you see in verses 1-13 that contribute to the sin of verse 6.

3) 'SIN' is essentially the attitude of 'self determination' in which we decide that we can take God's place (idolatry) and therefore rule our own lives and our world rather than letting Him rule. In sin we make ourselves 'sovereign' instead of God. We ('I') become the centre of our world, not God. Read Genesis 11:1-4 and discuss the ways in which the people there express their 'egos', their independence of God in word and action. They wanted to dominate creation and build up their own reputations (make a name for themselves).

4) Discuss the ways in which sin affects our lives, our communities and nations and our environment, now. Don't be depressed by this but at the same time please don't rush over this question - include clear and specific examples if you are comfortable doing so.

5) Take some time to pray, especially in prayers of confession either silently or aloud.

Part 2 - 'Rescue'

6) Read Genesis 3:14-24.

7) Humans have now exercised their will in rebelling against God. Now God responds in judgement - and in grace. Briefly describe the ways in which God's judgement affects human life.

8) In verse 15 there is the first mention of God's 'Rescue Plan'. Do you see it?

9) What examples of God's grace and love do you see in verses 14 to 24, especially in verses 20 to 24?

10) Why did God now stop Adam and Eve from eating from the 'Tree of Life'?

11) How do we gain access to the 'Life' that the 'Tree of Life' offered?

12) When we have entered fully into the Eternal Life Jesus gives us (in heaven) there will be no more sin and no possibility of sinning - 'Non Posse Peccare'. Try to imagine and then discuss what life free from sin and all its effects will be like.

13) Pray in thanks and praise for God's love, mercy and rescue in Jesus.

🔹 Once For All
🔹 Benediction // The love of the faithful Creator, the peace of the wounded Healer, the joy of the challenging Spirit, the hope of the Three-in-One surround and encourage us today, tonight, and forever. May the blessing of God – the Creator, the Healer, and the Spirit, be with us and remain with us always. Amen. (Source: The pattern of our days – Iona)

23rd August 2020 | Creation

Hi ICF family,

Welcome to our online service! This week we launch into our new series called ‘The Big Picture’. We’re going to get an overview of the whole Bible from Genesis to Revelation over the course of the next 11 weeks. The aim of this series is to see the big picture of the Bible, how it works as a unified story of God’s purpose for His world and for us as human beings. We hope you will find this series helpful as we cover the Bible as a whole. Our first topic, unsurprisingly, is ‘Creation’.

Early on in our service, Pastor Andrew will be leading us in Communion so please have some bread and grape juice or wine ready so you can follow along.

Our Zoom Coffee & Conversation chat is also on again after the service at about 10.45am. We hope you can join us for a quick chat!

🔹 Discussion questions:

Here is a pretty simple approach to our discussion for this week. Genesis chapters 1 to 3 are foundational to the rest of the Bible as they introduce us to themes which are developed throughout the Bible. We therefore suggest the following:

1) Read Genesis chapters 1 & 2 slowly and carefully.

2) Take your time to identify and write down themes and ideas introduced in Genesis 1 & 2 that are taken up throughout the rest of the Bible. It would be helpful to use the follow up cross references and ideas in your Bibles and Study Bibles. See if you can find examples in the rest of the Bible where these themes are developed.  For example, God is the Creator who creates an ordered, purposeful, world full of relationships. Paul takes up these and other ideas in Acts 17:16-34.

3) Discuss the themes you’ve identified and how they work out through the Bible.

🔹 How Great Thou Art
🔹 Benediction // Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Saviour, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen. ( Jude 24-25)

16th August 2020 | Creation's Reprieve?

Hi ICF family,

We’re so glad you could join us today for our online service!

Today is the last of our Hot Topics series around the theme of caring for the world God made. In the message today we’ll spend some time thinking about some environmental benefits observable during this time of COVID-19 as well as considering if there’s any hope of them continuing after COVID-19 passes. We also have a fun kid’s spot video lined up where three of our kids take you on a nature walk to check out some creation including some bits where humans messed up.

Our Zoom Coffee & Conversation chat is on again after the service at about 10.45am. We hope you can join us!

🔹 Discussion questions:

This week's Hot Topic is ‘Creation’s Reprieve?’ Has COVID-19 been good for the environment or not and how can we care for the world our God has made for us?

Please read Psalm 148, Genesis 1:2 - 2:3 and Psalm 104.

1) What does God think of His creation both before and after the fall?

2) What should we think of creation? What's your favourite part of creation?

3) What job did God give us to do for creation?

4) Did this task, or anything about it, change after the fall? (see Genesis chapter 3).

5) God is to be worshipped as creator, not the creation itself (Romans 1:21-25). How do our societies worship the creation?

6) How does worshipping God and rather than creation affect your view of or commitment to environmental causes? Does our conviction that there will be a 'new heaven and a new earth' (Revelation 21:1) affect your response to environmental issues?

7) What are some practical ways you can care for creation (the environment)?

🔹 This is My Father’s World
🔹 Benediction // Go with a tender and grateful heart, remembering that you may be the only gospel that your neighbour reads this week. So, in all you say and do, spread the grace of God, the love of Jesus and the friendship of the Holy Spirit. You are blessed by the grace, love and friendship of our Creator, and now you are commissioned to share it by being a blessing in this world. Amen.

🔹 Discussion questions:

This week's Hot Topic is the last of 3 weeks on the theme of Eschatology as we have a look at ‘The Second Coming’.

Our Bible Reading for church was 1 Thessalonians 4:13 - 5:11. Please read it carefully.

Paul was seeking to encourage the Thessalonians that no Christian, dead or alive, will miss out on being part of the resurrection of believers at Jesus' Second Coming.

Twice in this passage Paul says that the believers are to encourage one another.

1) How are they to encourage each other?

2) How are they meant to live in the light of Jesus’ return (see 5:1-11)?

3) In this part of Thessalonians only the resurrection of believers is mentioned. Yet Jesus’ second coming will involve the raising of all people for judgement. What passages can you find that add to the description of the second coming in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18?

4) One summary of Jesus' second coming suggests that it will
- by nature be glorious, decisive and sudden.
- have as its purpose completing the work of redemption, resurrecting the dead, judging all people and delivering the church.

Read the following passages (and any others you can find) and see how they describe the nature and purposes of the second coming as described above. Some passages are Matt 24:29-31, 2 Thess 1:8-10, 2 Peter 3:10, Matt 24:31-47, 1 Thess 5:1-3, John 14:1-4, Phil 3:20, Col 3:1-4, John 5:28-30, 2 Tim 4:8, Titus 2:11-14 and Mark 13:32-37.

5) Are there any things you think you should do or stop doing in the light of Jesus’ return (keep in mind the repeated insistence in the New Testament that we be ready and watchful)?

🔹 Crown Him With Many Crowns
🔹 Benediction // (May you) grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen. (2 Peter 3:18)

🔹 Discussion questions:

Our Hot Topics continue today as we consider ‘The Millennium’. This subject has often been unnecessarily divisive in Christian history.

The notion of the millennium is only referenced in Revelation 20:1-6. There are many other passages that speak of Jesus’ return, his second coming, in glory and power without mentioning the ‘1000 years’.

As you begin considering this topic it’s worth reading, among other passages, John 5:24-30, Titus 2:11-14, 1 John 3:2-3, Philippians 3:20-4:1 and 2 Peter 3:11-14.

1) What is the general and consistent picture of these passages about Jesus’ return and the judgement?

2) Revelation is a book which has the characteristics of at least 3 types of literature - Apocalyptic, Prophecy and a Letter. The focus is often on its Apocalyptic characteristics. ‘Apocalyptic’ is a  literary style which features often flamboyant images and symbols. Some have seen Revelation as a ‘puzzle book’ to be solved. Perhaps a better way of viewing it is as a ‘picture book’ which describes various truths with symbols rather than ideas. It’s use of symbols and the way in which many see it (unfortunately) as a puzzle to be solved has led to many different and often wild interpretations. Revelation 20:1-6 has given rise to 3 basic views of the millennium (1,000 years). Those views are Premillennialism, Amillennialism and Postmillennialism. These names describe when, in each view, they think Jesus will return in relation to the 1,000 years (i.e before {‘pre’} the 1,000 years, not at all {‘A’} during or after the 1,000 years as the 1,000 is seen to be a symbolic number and Jesus will return at the end of the current age, or after {‘Post’} the 1,000 years. While Amillennialism clearly thinks the 1,000 years is a symbolic number the other 2 views don’t necessarily view the 1,000 years a literal either. One clear distinctive of Pre and Post millennialism from Amillennialism is that the latter doesn’t view Jesus’ rule as being expressed in an earthly kingdom or rule.

Premillennialism suggests that Jesus will return at the start of (before or ‘pre’) the 1,000 years to rule His kingdom on earth. At the end of this time the judgement will come.
Amillennialism suggests that Jesus rules His kingdom from heaven (now) till his 2nd coming (1,000 years is symbolic) and will judge immediately at his return / 2nd coming.
Postmillennialism suggests that an age of peace and righteousness (in which the world will be largely Christian) will dawn on earth and this will be the ‘the millennium’. Then Jesus will come back “post”, or after, the millennium to judge all people.

3) What understanding of Jesus’ return, rule, and judgement do the passages referred to above suggest is the case?

4) How do the passages above, especially Titus 2:11-14, 1 John 3:2-3, Philippians 3:20-4:1 and 2 Peter 3:11-14, suggest we live now?

5) Which of the three views do you think best describes what the Bible says as a whole about Jesus’ rule, return and judgement?

🔹 Christ Our Hope in Life and Death
🔹 Benediction // May the God who shakes heaven and earth, whose Spirit blows through the valleys and the hills; whom death could not contain and who lives to disturb and bring us life; bless us with the power to endure, to hope and to love. Amen. (Source: Elizabeth Raine)
